National Sanskrit University sexual harassment case: Probe team goes to meet ‘harassed’ girl

TIRUPATI: The probe into the alleged sexual harassment of a first-year postgraduate student from Odisha by two assistant professors of National Sanskrit University, Tirupati, has been intensified.

A police team, led by Tirupati West CI Murali Mohan, has gone to Odisha to record the victim’s statement. Tirupati SP L Subbarayudu has appointed DSP Bakthavatsalam as the supervising officer to expedite the probe.

Mobile phones and other digital gadgets seized from the accused have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Tirupati for analysis.

Amid growing outrage in Andhra Pradesh and New Delhi, Home Minister V Anitha reviewed the progress of case investigation with Tirupati SP and senior police officers over the phone. She said police acted swiftly upon receiving the complaint, and assured that the case investigation is being closely monitored.

Confirming that a police team has been sent to Odisha, she said, “Women’s safety is our priority. Strict action will be taken, and no one involved in the incident will be spared. Justice will be ensured to the victim.”

The issue also echoed in Parliament. Tirupati YSRCP MP Maddila Gurumoorthy moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, demanding urgent discussion. He termed the incident ‘deeply disturbing and unacceptable”, and alleged that the Dalit student was blackmailed using private photos and videos.

During Question Hour, Warangal Congress MP Kadiyam Kavya also raised the matter while speaking on access to education for girl students.

She urged Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to intervene and ensure justice to the young woman, who reportedly left the university due to harassment and humiliation. The Telangana MP stressed the need for strict measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents on university campuses nationwide. The case has drawn widespread attention, with investigators focusing on digital evidence, victim testimony, and witness accounts.
