VISAKHAPATNAM: A total of 3,026.90 kg of single-use plastic has been seized by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) following the enforcement of its ban from January 1, 2025, aimed at making Visakhapatnam a plastic-free city.
According to official data, between September 9, 2025 and March 28, 2026, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) imposed 4,867 spot fines for violations related to plastic usage. The civic body collected Rs. 25,09,960 in penalties during this period.
In addition, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) intensified action against littering. From January 1, 2025 to March 28, 2026, a total of 6,352 spot fines were issued, with `34,09,678 collected as penalties. GVMC Chief Medical Officer Dr ENV Naresh Kumar confirmed the figures, stating that the drive is part of ongoing efforts to curb plastic pollution and improve sanitation in the city.
However, concerns over waste management persist. Speaking with The New Indian Express, a resident from Gopalapatnam said there is no proper disposal of waste in the area. The resident pointed out that even households not using plastic covers are affected, as surrounding areas remain filled with plastic waste due to poor maintenance.
The resident added that garbage is not cleared regularly, leading to overflowing bins and waste spilling onto roads.
Plastic bags were reported to be blocking drainage lines, causing overflow and waterlogging, particularly during rains.
The situation has led to foul smell, mosquito breeding, and health issues such as viral fevers among children.
The resident also noted that regular mosquito control measures, including smoke spraying, are no longer being carried out. GVMC officials said plastic continues to pose a serious threat to public health, animals, and aquatic life. They urged citizens to avoid plastic use and adopt eco-friendly alternatives, while supporting civic efforts to improve cleanliness.
