Crime rate declines by 24.23 percent in Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam district has recorded a notable decline in overall crime rate from January to March 2026, signalling an encouraging trend in law and order.

According to the official data from Visakhapatnam City Police Commissioner Office, the total number of cases registered has come down to 1,748, compared to 2,307 cases in the same period last year, marking a decrease of 24.23 per cent. This is a significant improvement from 2,198 cases reported in 2024, indicating sustained efforts by the city police in curbing criminal activities in Visakhapatnam.

The property offences in Vizag which include crimes such as robbery, dacoity and theft, have witnessed a fall of 39.88 per cent, dropping from 341 cases in 2025 to 205 cases in 2026. Similarly, bodily offences including murder, culpable homicide, rioting, kidnappings, Grievous hurt, simple hurt and attempt to murder have reduced by 32.84 per cent, declining from 204 to 137 cases.

Crime against women has also shown a notable decrease of 24.41 per cent, with cases coming down from 258 last year to 195 this year.

One of the most significant improvements has been observed under the POCSO Act, where cases have drastically fallen by 66.66 per cent, from 33 to just 11 cases. Road accidents too have declined by 16.32 per cent, indicating improved enforcement and awareness measures.

Economic offences such as cheating, criminal breach of trust, and counterfeit currency have remained relatively stable, showing a marginal dip of 2.08 per cent.

Meanwhile, narcotics-related cases have decreased by 28.20 per cent, and cyber crime cases have seen a modest reduction of 9.37 per cent.

Speaking to TNIE, City Police Commissioner Shankha Brata Bagchi said that the deployment of surveillance tools such as drones, CCTV cameras and body-worn cameras has strengthened monitoring, decrease of crime rate and deterrence.

He said crime rate decreased by 24.23 percent in three months compared to the previous year for the same period.

He highlighted that data-based crime mapping has helped in identifying sensitive areas and deploying forces more effectively.
