VISAKHAPATNAM: Describing Andhra University as a ‘melting pot of ideas and leadership,’ Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan on Monday highlighted its century-long contribution to nation-building, even as State leaders outlined a forward-looking agenda centred on innovation, research and global engagement.

Addressing the gathering at the centenary celebrations at the Andhra University Engineering Grounds, he called it a privilege to witness ‘a historic milestone marking a hundred years of excellence,’ noting that the institution has not only witnessed history but helped shape it.

Recalling the legacy of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, he observed that education must cultivate both intellect and character, a vision that remains relevant.

Pointing to Andhra Pradesh’s growth trajectory, the Vice-President noted that the State is emerging as a major investment and innovation hub, with Visakhapatnam gaining prominence in data centres, Information Technology T and digital infrastructure.

Emphasising perseverance, he remarked that even India’s cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar had to wait to achieve his covete milestones, underlining that success demands patience and resilience.

Naidu announces Rs 500 cr boost for growth of Andhra varsity

In his address, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced a `500 crore budget to Andhra University, and called for efforts to position it among the top institutions nationally and globally. He linked the university’s legacy with the State’s development journey, calling the centenary a defining moment.

Recalling that the first Cabinet meeting after bifurcation was held on the campus, he described Andhra University as the ‘guiding light’ among the State’s institutions. Highlighting Visakhapatnam’s emergence as a global investment destination, he pointed to major developments, including the groundbreaking ceremony of Google data centre.

Stressing the need to reorient higher education, he urged students to move beyond conventional career paths. “Although I am 76-years-old, I think like a 26-year-old. Your goal should not be merely to secure a job, but to create jobs,” he observed, advocating stronger industry linkages and innovation ecosystems within universities.

HRD Minister Nara Lokesh described the university as ‘not just an institution, but an emotion,’ reflecting its deep connection with generations of students. Highlighting its academic and societal impact, he noted, “From physics to politics, the imprint of Andhra University remains indelible.” He stressed the importance of bridging the skill gap through curriculum reforms and practical exposure, observing that education should not remain confined to classrooms. “AU is a source of pride not just for our state but for India itself. The goal is for AU to secure the 3rd position in the country’s overall rankings,” he added.

Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who attended the event as a guest of honour, drew from his personal journey to underline the value of discipline and perseverance. “Success never happens overnight. It takes time. Be patient and follow the right path,” he remarked, adding that self-confidence is the ultimate weapon in overcoming challenges.

Governor Syed Abdul Nazeer, former Vice-president of India Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, Odisha Governor Kambhampati Hari Babu, and others were present.
