NELLORE: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the State, the district administration has launched “Vidya Vasati Vikasam” (Education, Accommodation and Development) programme to comprehensively modernise all weaker sections and minority welfare hostels under a single umbrella, transforming them into safe, technology-enabled and student-friendly residential campuses.
“The objective of Vidya Vasati Vikasam is to ensure every student has access to safe, dignified and quality residential facilities. No student should be left behind due to inadequate infrastructure. We are working on the initiative for the past two months to improve residential facilities in 155 SC, ST, BC, Tribal and Minority Welfare hostels and residential schools. The programme will be implemented with support from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds and contributions from donors,” District Collector Himanshu Shukla said.
The project has been designed with an estimated outlay of Rs 34.80 crore, benefiting 19,069 students, and Rs 20.35 crore was earmarked for repairing and upgrading infrastructure, while Rs 14.45 crore will be spent on furniture, equipment and modern amenities. The works include renovation of old buildings, providing running water, and other amenities. The initiative provides a wide range of essential facilities for students.
The project will be implemented in five phases, beginning with administrative approvals and fund release, followed by allocation of works, building repairs, water supply, sanitation and electrical works, procurement and distribution of equipment.
The programme will be monitored directly by the District Collector. The District BC Welfare and Empowerment officer will serve as the nodal officer, while the Engineering Wing of APEWIDC will oversee execution and quality control.
