VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) for extensive exploration of lithium and gallium deposits in Vempalle area of Kadapa Basin.
The MoU was signed between NGRI and the Mines and Geology Department at the State Secretariat on Wednesday in the presence of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
Preliminary studies conducted by NGRI in and around Thummalapalle had indicated the presence of lithium and gallium minerals in Kadapa Basin.
Lithium concentration is estimated to be as high as 1,000 parts per million (ppm), while gallium levels are estimated at up to 250 ppm.
The agreement was signed to undertake detailed studies and assess the mineral potential of the region.
Centre of Excellence for Mining to come up in AP
The project will be funded entirely by the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET), and is estimated to cost around Rs 140 crore.
Govt signs MoU with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad
In another major development, the State government also signed an MoU with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad-TEXMiN to promote research, technology and skill development in Andhra Pradesh’s mining sector.
Under the agreement, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad will establish a Centre of Excellence for Mining in the State. The initiative is aimed at strengthening research capabilities, promoting the adoption of advanced technologies and developing skilled human resources for the mining sector.
Minister for Mines Kollu Ravindra, senior officials of the Mines and Geology Department and representatives of the institutions concerned attended the MoU signing ceremonies.
