KOPPAL: The state government is reportedly planning to set up a special Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) and Rice Technology Park (RTP) near Karatagi in Gangavati taluk of Koppal district. A team of scientists, headed by PG Chengappa, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Agriculture Sciences, Bangalore, has submitted a report in this regard.
According to sources, the report has noted that paddy is grown in around 95 per cent land of 8.96 lakh acres of command area under the Tungabhadra Project (TBP), comprising Bellary, Raichur and Koppal districts. However, the infrastructure required to handle such huge quantity of paddy is unavailable, resulting in transport of paddy to Tamil Nadu, the report pointed out.
The report has identified Navali village near Karatagi for setting up the RTP.
