HAVERI: The Central government has issued orders to continue literacy programmes under the continuing education scheme in Haveri, Mysore, Mandya, Bangalore city and Bidar districts of the state.
This was announced by District Adult Education Officer and District Saksharata Samiti secretary IA Lokapur here on Saturday.
Lokapur was speaking at the districtlevel review meeting of literacy programmes at the Deputy Commissioner's office.
He said that the continuation of the literacy programmes was sanctioned following an evaluation by an external agency.
Lokapur announced that the new 'Jana Sakrata Abhiyana’ programme which aimed to train illiterates from communities coming under scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, by students, would be implemented in Haveri district from the year 2009-10.
Target set The programme has been set a target of making 12,000 illiterate persons in all the seven taluks of the district literate.
In the first phase training will be given to illiterate persons of 16 grama panchayats, Lokapur added.
Additional District Adult Education Officer N G Kulkarni were among those who were present at the meeting.
