BANGALORE: Within three months, all postgraduate doctors in the state need to register themselves with Karnataka Medical Council (KMC), failing which they will not be considered as registered medical practictioners.

Dr Chittanajappa, president of KMC, said the decision had been taken in a meeting of Medical Council of India's Board of Governors and heads of all the states' medical councils. The meeting was held in New Delhi on Monday.

Dr Chittanajappa said the rule existed earlier too but it was not mandatory. Now it has been made mandatory.

"Further, we will be formulating certain guidelines for penalty in case the PG doctors fail to register themselves within three months starting from now on."

He said it was decided in the meeting that MBBS students could apply for provisional registration during their oneyear internship and could apply for permanent registration upon completion of the course.

"Earlier the students had to wait for long for the provisional registration certificate, but from now on forms will be sent to the colleges, so that every doctor gets a chance to practice," he said.

Also, KMC has made clear that doctors registered with medical council of some other state have to register with KMC to practice in Karnataka. Dr Chittanajappa said doctors practicing here would have to surrender the registration certificate that medical council of other state had issued to them.

The KMC president further said that at the meeting, heads of all the states' medical council asked that the statelevel councils should be given a say in matters related to medical education. Dr Chittanajappa said they had a say only in case of registration and disciplinary action against doctors.

"But medical council should have a say in matters relating to increasing the number of seats in medical colleges and inspection of medical colleges," he said.

He added that doctors should stick to their system of medicine and specialisation. To illustrate, he said homeopathy or ayurvedic doctors should not venture into allopathy. He said those doctors who practice in field other than they are trained in should be punished.
