BANGALORE: More than four lakh youngsters in the age group of 1835 years have joined youth Congress in the state, Secretary of Indian Youth Congress (IYC) Biswarannjan Mohanty claimed on Tuesday.

Mohanty, who is also in charge of party affairs in Karnataka, told Express that the IYC's membership drive had received an overwhelming response in both rural and urban centres. He said the exercise would end on April 25.

He said Karnataka's Youth Congress wing had set a target to enrol new members in all the 46,000plus booths in the state. He added that the officebearers of the IYC at all levels, including Block, District and State, would be elected directly as there was no provision to nominate the body.

Mohanty said Rahul Gandhi, during his visit to the state on Wednesday, would address potential candidates who would contest in the organisation elections of the state unit of IYC. He informed that Gandhi's visit was purely related to organisational elections of IYC and he would not speak to media as it was not included in his schedule.

Gandhi would arrive in Hubli on Wednesday morning in a special flight and reach Bijapur by a helicopter. After addressing new IYC members, he would head to Udupi in afternoon.

He will interact with IYC members in Bangalore too along with the new officebearers of the KPCC Executive Committee. He will hold a meeting of party legislators, defeated candidates of both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, city corporators and senior party leaders.
