GANGAVATI: Noted Kannada critic K Y Narayanswamy has advised poets to write poems on present issues and voice the feelings of the common man.
Inaugurating a poets meet organised here on Sunday, Narayanswamy said when a poet became rich his poetry became poor.
He said as today’s Kannada poets were ‘happy’ but with the present system their poems had lost their charm.
He said poets could have written poems on subjects like the ‘Made Made Snana’ and other social evils which had become an insult to mankind.
Narayanswamy said he was happy as several poets from down trodden communities were writing poems in Kannada.
He said epic heroes of Puranas should become the symbol of new values.
Narayanswamy said Kannada poetry never feared to oppose the government and the upper class.
However, he felt sorry that several poets and writers were going to any extent to get an award from the government.
Poet Buddhanna Hingmire presided over the conference and advised young poets to read and understand the poems written by Kuvempu, Bendre and Adiga.
He said the young generation should study the history of Kannada literature.
