MANGALORE: 'Gudbud,' every child's initiation to the exotic world of ice creams and a must-have on the menu of every fledgling ice cream parlour, has completed 35 years.

It may come as a pleasant surprise that Gudbud continues to remain ahead of the delightful 'Parfait ice cream', chocolate-rich Tiramisu and 50 other yummy flavours in this port city.

Tracing its origin, its creator Prabhakar Kamath vividly remembers conjuring up five combinations one afternoon in his humble Ideal Trade ice cream parlour. Just a yearold in 197677, the parlour had a small fan following who found one particular combination irresistible and delicious.

Creamyrich vanilla, strawberry, kesar, fruits and jelly, which made up the delectable Gudbud became a rage among the customers during the trial period itself. Its popularity demanded a name and much as they tried they could not come up with one that made everyone happy. Kamath recollected that as the combination was made in haste ('gadibidi' in Kannada), he decided on 'Gudbud' which also sounded good.

Gudbud today has a place of pride not only in the six ice cream parlours run by Ideal but in all ice cream parlours dotted across the state.

Ideal now managed by second generation entrepreneurs, is planning new flavours to complement the 35th year of Gudbud.

'Grand Gudbud' introduced only at Ideal Ice cream parlour in City Centre mall appears similar to the old Gudbud. But the difference lies in its taste, S Mukund Kamath informs.

Grand gudbud, a grand mix of 'Shahinuts', 'pink passion' (almond) and 'nutcut' (nuts, raisins and jelly) is just beyond words. Since February, Ideal ice cream parlour has been creating one flavour after another.

"We have crated 16 new flavours in the highend premium ice cream (thicker ice cream) and 10 more new ones will follow soon," informs Mukund Nayak, who spends almost 90 minutes every day to arrive at the perfect lipsmacking flavour.
