Close on the heels of a report about a mentally disturbed youth who was locked up in a room for 16 years in Davangere district, another such incident came to light in Chamarajanagar district.

Madesha (26), who is mentally-challenged, had been chained and locked up in a room by his parents for eight years at Banavadi village of Chamarajanagar.

Chamarajanagar Tahsildar Chandrakanth and other officials, who came to know of the plight of Madesha, visited the village on Monday and released him. They immediately admitted him to the Chamarajanagar District Hospital. Madesha’s parents are also in the hospital to take care of him.

Madesha, is the only son of agricultural labourers Jade Gowda and Shivamma. Madesha, a school dropout, too used to work as a labourer to help his family.

Eight years ago, he slipped into depression and started throwing stones at others. People often complained to his parents about his violent behaviour. Unable to provide him proper treatment, the parents chained him and locked him up in a room.

The officials said Madesha might be taken to a hospital in Mysore or Bangalore.
