Teachers of the country should introspect as there is no internationally-recognised university in India, said former Union minister Oscar Fernandes on Sunday.

He was speaking at a book release programme organised by the Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT) at Besant Women’s College and said that teachers were responsible for failure in providing the best education to youth.

There is not a single university in India that is recognised in the list of 100 best universities in the world, he rued.

He said the Union government plans to table a draft bill on higher education and research to improve the education system in the country. “We have not able to establish a university which can be called the best university in the world in many years,” he added.

Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy said that quality education can bring about changes in the youth. Increase in the number of universities in the country has not been helpful in providing jobs to all the educated youth. 80 per cent of youth who have received higher education are unemployed in the country, he said. He honoured retired teachers on behalf of AMUCT at the programme.
