The search for a woman, allegedly kept under house arrest by her mother, failed here on Thursday. Women and Child Development officials conducted the search along with police.

The woman, however, is said to have been taken in a van along with her mother. She was not traced even at the end of the day.

Amid incidents of house arrest of kith and kin by some families coming to light in Bangalore, residents of Dharwad woke up to one such incident wherein a postgraduate woman, who was mentally challenged, was allegedly kept at her house for more than two years by her mother.

Conflicting views over the incident are being aired with regard to the condition of the girl. Neighbours said Sandhya (28), who was said to have worked as a part-time lecturer for some time, had confined herself to indoors, following the death of her father Vilas Rao who retired as a Deputy Tahsildar after serving at Gadag.

It is said, due to Sandhya’s health condition, her mother Usha, used to lock the door while going outside the house. Except this, no abnormal behaviour of Sandhya was noticed, said a neighbour.

When Express visited their house at Malamaddi, it was found locked and only curious onlookers were seen. They were standing besides the house following the contrasting news being aired on TV news channels.

It is also said the daughter and her mother have been taken to an unknown place in a van away from public gaze.

When contacted, Deputy Director of the Department of Women and Child Development Trishula Appannavar said she also enquired about it, but nothing came out of it.

Vidyanagar Police Inspector Rodkar (Hubli) and some officials were seen searching for her.
