The Legislative Council, or, the House of Elders, witnessed members of both opposition and the treasury benches trading charges against each other. The members of the BJP and JD(S) staged a walkout and the House was adjourned for a brief period on Friday.

Pandemonium prevailed when Opposition leader D V Sadananda Gowda, participating in a debate on the motion of thanks to the governor’s address, referred to the fraud cases and scams being faced by the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre. Taking serious note of Gowda’s attempt to drag the UPA government into the governor’s address, Higher Education Minister R V Deshapande demanded that the BJP leader limit his speech to the address.

But Gowda continued his tirade against the UPA government for its failure in curbing the corruption. The Congress leaders shouted and tried to prevent Gowda from making the speech.

Repeated appeals made by Chairman of the House, D H Shankaramurthy, to calm down the members went in vain. Shankaramurthy warned that the proceedings will not be recorded till normalcy returns to the House.

Taking strong exception to the behaviour of the Congress members, who continued to disturb Gowda’s speech, the BJP leaders threatened to stage a walkout from the House.

The BJP members, led by Sadananda Gowda, trooped out of the House to protest the unruly behaviour of the members of the treasury benches, who shouted that the Opposition should get out of the House. When the JD(S) members criticised the Congress members’ attitude of brow-beating the Opposition, the House plunged into chaos once again with the Congress members shouting at the JD(S) members.

Registering his protest against the Congress members’ attitude towards the opposition, JD(S) member Sandesh Nagaraj also walked out of the House while Shankaramurthy adjourned the House for a brief period. However, normalcy returned when the House reassembled again.
