A progressive farmer of Attigere village in Davangere taluk reaped 65 quintals of paddy per acre this year, the highest yield in the State this year.

Chandrashekar K V grew Sona Cross variety of paddy on 13 acres, according to the Department of Agriculture. Now, the variety of paddy grown by him is in demand.

“Use of bio-fertiliser rather helped me get a bumper yield this year,” says Chandrashekar. “During the season, paddy is getting good price and I am hopeful of clearing loan I got to grow crops in last few years,” he says.

According to Joint Director of Agriculture Gollar, pre-monsoon showers or March rains, had brought relief to paddy growers as the diseases affecting the crop during summer, such as green worms were reduced.

Minimum use of urea fertiliser as additional manure for paddy and use of nitrogen also brings down diseases and helps increase the yield, says Gollar. He also advises farmers to stop storing water between paddy lines in fields.

Agriculture scientist Harish from University of Agriculture Sciences (UAS), Dharwad, who visited the field said the bio-fertiliser called DNP (dynamic nutrient provider) introduced in the university helped Chandrashekar get the best possible yield of paddy. This bio-fertiliser contains mild and light nutrients, with bio-components, he said.

“Last year the yield was about 35-40 quintals per acre and use of bio-fertiliser has brought me the highest yield this year. I will try to continue bio-farming,” says Chandrashekar.
