

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said Union Minister of State for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh has sanctioned Rs 774 crore under the Indira Awas Yojana to construct 87,816 houses across the state for 2013-14.
After a meeting with the Union Minister here on Friday, the Chief Minister said: “We have appealed to the Union government to grant 50,000 more houses to Karnataka for which Ramesh had asked us to send a separate proposal to the Centre.”
He said these houses will be mainly for people of
the most vulnerable sections, HIV affected and devadasis.
The CM said the Union Minister has also agreed to sanction Rs 724 crore to construct houses for people belonging to SC/ST and other vulnerable sections in society.
“The state has already received Rs 272 crore in this regard,” he added.
He said that the Union Minister, after reviewing the performance of the state in the implementation of the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), has agreed to lay 2,547 km-long new road in the rural areas.
“The cost of laying roads will be over Rs 1,100 crore,” he added.
Following drought situation in the state for the last two years, the Union Minister agreed to grant Rs 272 crore for 2013-14 for the watershed development programme, the CM said and added this programme aims to improve the productivity of farm lands.
Referring to glaring irregularities pointed out in the CAG report regarding the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), the Chief Minister said measures will be taken to address the issues raised by the auditing agency.
RDPR Minister H K Patil said Ramesh sanctioned the proposal of a national rural academy in Bangalore to promote rural self-employment opportunities.
