As many as 70 members took oath on day two of  the 14th Assembly session on Thursday.

With this, 216 members have taken oath, of the total 223 members. The results of Periyapatna Assembly constituency, which went to polls on May 26 following death of a BJP candidate, would be announced on Friday.

However, seven members who were absent for the oath taking ceremony were: D K Shivakumar (Kanakapura), Fairoz Nuruddin Saith (Belgaum North), BSR Congress president B Sriramulu (Bellary),  Jagadish Kumar (Hebbal), B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan (Chamarajpet), H S Prakash (Hassan) and T H Suresh Babu (Kampli).

Opposition leader in the Assembly H D Kumaraswamy, former minister N Chaluvaraya Swamy, K S Puttanaiah, former speaker Ramesh Kumar and former minister C T Ravi were among the 70 members who took oath on Thursday.

Prabhu Chavan of the BJP (Aurad) from Lambani community was the centre of attraction for his traditional attire. Clad in a pink dress and headgear Chavan took oath in Kannada.

Pro tem Speaker Malikayya V Guttedar instructed all members to take oath as prescribed under rule 188 of the third schedule of the Constitution. This followed the  objections raised by senior Congress leader Basavaraj Rayaraddi on Wednesday, when a few members took oath in the name of their parents, god and social reformers. In spite of pro tem Speaker’s instructions, Bhima Naik (Hagaribommanahalli) took oath in the name of his father. Assembly Secretary Omprakash asked the member to take oath in the name of god/truth.

Vasanth Bangera of the Congress, who represents Belthangady constituency, was asked to take oath twice. Bangera first took oath in Tulu and later in Kannada. Guttedar asked him to take the oath again in Kannada since Tulu does not figure in the 22 official language recognised by the Constitution.

DKS postpones oath

Kanakapura MLA D K Shivakumar who was denied a Cabinet berth said he did not take oath because of ‘religious obligations’.

He told Express that he was unwell as well as he had other commitments. He said he would take oath may be after Monday. It may be mentioned here that Shivakumar has been unhappy over not securing a berth in the Council of Ministers.
