The Department of Collegiate Education has initiated measures to provide broadband connectivity to all government degree colleges in the state.

Each college will get 10 broadband connectivity of 512mb kbps speed. The colleges have been asked to apply for the internet connection at the nearby BSNL offices under the scheme. Seventy-five per cent of the monthly bill of the broadband connectivity will be borne by the government while the 25 per cent of the expenditure should be paid by the respective colleges. The expenditure can be borne from college development funds.

High-speed internet is being provided in order to modernise teaching and learning methods at higher education levels.

The scheme is being implemented under the National Mission on Education through Information Communication Technology (NMEICT).

Director of the department B L Bhagyalakshmi stated in a circular to all the principals of 362 government degree colleges and the newly started 47 colleges that the scheme would help students get access to latest learning methods. They can also prepare for competitive examinations. Of the 409 colleges, 200 colleges have already recieved the broadband connectivity.

However, some colleges have issues which will be resolved, she stated.

Colleges with low speed internet connectivity have been asked to disconnect and get new connection under the scheme.

In-charge Joint Director of the Department of College Education R P Shankar told Express that there are 60 government degree colleges and one law college in the limits of the Gulbarga division which include Gulbarga, Bidar, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal and Bellary districts. Though most of the colleges have the connection, they are not fully reaping the benefits owing to financial and technical issues.

Some colleges have not been given the connectivity due to the distance. Measures will be initiated to provide broadband connectivity to all the colleges once the circular is received, he said.
