DHARWAD : The Lokayukta police produced former vice-chancellor of Karnatak University, Dharwad (KUD) H B Walikar before its special court on Tuesday.
After Walikar was discharged from Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru on Tuesday morning, the Lokayukta police brought him to Dharwad and produced before the court around 4.15 pm.
Walikar, the main accused in the KUD irregularity case, looked weak after almost a month-long treatment in Bengaluru, entered the court with the help of assistants.
When Judge S S Ballolli asked him to be seated, Walikar broke into tears. Looking at his condition, the judge said: “Right now you are only an accused. The allegations against you are not yet proved. You should not lose heart.”
“After my arrest on October 20, I would have been granted bail had I been produced before you immediately. Instead I was taken to hospital and made to suffer,” Walikar said.
Advocate V G Patil, who argued in favour of Walikar, said since the Lokayukta police had got Walikar admitted in Jayadeva Hospital, they should have paid the hospital bill. However, Walikar’s son paid the bill. Patil urged the court to direct the government to repay the amount.
The Judge ordered Walikar to appear before the court on January 3 after obtaining two sureties.
