BENGALURU: The garbage menace in the city will be resolved in six months as the government has taken the initiative of setting up processing units on the outskirts of the city, said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah here on Sunday.

Speaking at Ideal Homes Cooperative Society’s golden jubilee celebration at Rajarajeshwari (RR) Nagar in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said in the 70s and 80s, the city was good but later effective planning was not done.

After the city’s population touched 1 crore, people haven’t had the required drinking water, sanitation and good roads.

“Now to address issues like garbage, first, out of 198 wards 178 will have a dry waste collection centre so that sending waste to processing units is reduced and dry waste can be recycled within city limits. Once all the processing units are set up, there will not be any problem for the next 20 years at least,” he said.

At the function, he lauded the efforts of cooperatives which are providing homes to more people than Bangalore Development Authority. “Today owning a site and building a home is a challenge. For example in RR Nagar one square foot will cost `8,000. It is the government’s responsibility to provide shelter and it also gave sites through BDA. So far, only 1.5 lakh sites have been given whereas co-operative societies have given more sites to people, and are helping the government in this way,” he said.

The chief minister said the previous government had announced the availability of 30,000 BDA sites in 2010 but nothing happened. But the government has assured them of sites.

At first, 12,610 sites will be given phase wise. “Not everybody will get a site; people will get sites based on seniority. The government will give sites the next year as well,” he said.
