DHARWAD:  The Third Additional JMFC Special Court has dismissed the bail application of H B Walikar, vice-chancellor of Karnatak University, in connection with a case relating to irregularities at the university. Three others who were arrested by the Lokayukta Police on Monday were granted bail.

Special Court Judge S S Bellulli pronounced the order on the bail applications at 3 pm on Thursday.

While granting bail to the other accused — former registrar (evaluation) H T Pote, former finance officer S Rajashri and Walikar’s personal assistant S L Bilagi — the judge directed their advocate Jagadish Gundakalmath to produce Rajashri (accused number three) before the court to complete the formalities of securing bail. The two others had appeared before the court on Tuesday.

The court granted them bail on the condition that they would produce personal bonds of `2 lakh each and solvency certificates.

They were also directed not to tamper with evidence, cooperate with the investigation officer and not leave the court’s jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, the court, which heard the anticipatory bail pleas of six other accused, posted the case for further hearing on Tuesday. Advocate Gundakalmath said a decision on the next step for Walikar would be decided after they get a copy of the court order.

The Lokayukta police had arrested Walikar and three others based on a complaint filed by the university’s registrar (administration), following a direction from the Governor’s office after allegations of irregularities at the university surfaced.

While Rajashri and Walikar were admitted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) after their arrest, Pote and Bilagi were sent to judicial custody. On Wednesday, they too were admitted to KIMS on health grounds.
