Debt forced a  Bangalore-based family of four to end their lives at a private lodge in Subrahmanya, concluded the police who are investigating the case.

According to police sources, a death note left behind by Nanjundaiah (45) stated that having lost all money in his jewellery shop in Chickpet, he owed lakhs to money lenders. The death note hinted that money lenders had issued life threats.

According to the police the family had consumed cyanide laced ice-cream after the last meal possibly on May 7, the day they checked into the room.

A police team, headed by DySP H D Mendonca, forensic experts and others, completed the postmortem of  the bodies of Nanjundaiah, his wife Jayalakshmi(39) and children Pavan (13) and Shrilakshmi (8) on Sunday.

Subrahmanya police said that the investigation is on and a team will be sent to Bangalore for probe.
