BADANAVALU:The Badanavalu Khadi centre that has a long history of producing the best khadi, is now educating thousands about sustainable living.
People from various districts are making a beeline for the khadi village to extend support to theatre personality Prasanna who launched a campaign to save khadi and handloom and promote sustainable living through various activities and programmes.
The barren land around Khadi Gramodyog unit turned out to be an education centre for the people from all walks of life, particularly those from urban background. On Sunday, a group of youths who visited the unit, took oath that they would lead a simple life, give up plans of grand functions and avoid use of plastics.
They were told not to use fertilisers and pesticides and participate in conservation of soil and water.
The organisers asked the people to adopt rain water harvesting, not to use spurious and adulterated food and conserve seeds.
Organic vegetables, traditional food and equipment used for agriculture activities and varieties of rice and pulses are displayed here. The organisers also screen short films and documentaries on sustainable living.
The events that had no guests from political parties or local elected representatives were addressed by experts in environmental issues, organic farming and power and farmers. Many people turned out to listen to experts on global warming, traditional farming methods and the impact of genetically modified seeds at the two venues. Prasanna said sustainable living is closer to nature and would play a vital role in conservation of natural resources.
