BENGALURU: He was known to go behind developers and builders who evaded tax; he allegedly recovered Rs 400 crore as income tax; people knew him as an honest officer; his former senior described the man, who won many hearts as Kolar DC, as “extremely hard working.”

IAS officer DK Ravikumar, who worked as Deputy Commissioner in Kolar, had moved into Bengaluru last October following a transfer. He was then designated as Joint Commissioner of State Commercial Taxes Department in Bengaluru, for which he commuted from his flat in Tavarekere.

On March 16th, his wife who came to check on him as he had not answered any phone calls for the whole day, was shocked to see him hanging from the ceiling fan.

While the preliminary reports suggested it was suicide, family and relatives have been crying foul play. Several protests and candlelight marches were organised by his friends and colleagues to express their shock, with many urging that he was a man of strength and not someone who would end his life. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah handed over the matter to the CID while Opposition argued for a CBI investigation.

Irked by Siddaramaiah’s adamant decision to stick to CID probe, March 19 saw a state-wide protest, dharna, marches and lathi charges. Bengaluru’s streets also had MLAs from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal Secular (JDS) jointly marching up to the Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala’s residence, where they submitted a memorandum requesting him to immediately look into the matter. The matter was presented also in the Lok Sabha by Pralhad Joshi, who urged the Centre to step in.

While the streets across the state were buzzing with people and restless loud slogans, Doddakoppalu in Kunigal Taluk saw Ravi’s family yet to come to terms with reality, as quietly mourned sitting by the place where he was laid to rest.

With no death note being found and an appointment he had given a whistle blower to show him some documents, Ravikumar's sudden demise is no less than a mystery challenge for investigating officers. While the family waits for the officers to gather evidences to say it was not a suicide, we bring you every development that has been place since his death.
