SIRSI:Joida in Uttara Kannada district is the only taluk headquarters in the entire state which comes under GP governance, said Additional Deputy Commissioner Prasannakumar.
Of the 11 taluks in the district, 10 are governed by either the city municipality or the town panchayat.
Before 1970, Supa was the taluk headquarters. In view of the Supa hydro-power project, the headquarters was shifted to Joida.
As the population in Joida was less than 10,000, it was put under GP governance.
Only on the consent of the Governor, can a town panchayat be upgraded to taluk headquarters. And for this purpose, an official proposal should be submitted by the GP, Prasannakumar said.
The most backward taluk, (as per the Nanjudappa committee report) with its headquarters at Joida, consists of 15 gram panchayats.
Elections will be held for Joida and elsewhere in the state on May 29.Â
