BENGALURU: The state government will make an all-out effort to accommodate the Kunchitiga community, a sub-sect of Vokkaligas, in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

The government will send recommendations to the Union government in this regard, said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

He spoke after the inauguration of  a convention of the Kunchitiga community here on Saturday. “In 1995-96, the Shyam Sunder Committee did not make any efforts to include the community in the OBC fold. But the present government is for the upliftment of the OBCs and downtrodden,”  he said.

He also stressed on the need of an independent committee to study about the community. The process of including the community in (3)B category will be initiated after getting the socio-economic status report, he said.

Defending the reservation system, he said it is necessary as long as the society is caste-based.

Later, a book titled ‘Andu Matthu Indu’ was released by Home Minister G Parameshwara.

Law Minister T B Jayachandra and Social Welfare Minister H Anjenaya were present.
