SHIVAMOGGA/BENGALURU: A fire broke out at the Sharavati hydro-electric unit at Jog Falls on Thursday. No one was injured.  The generation plant, run by the Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd, was engulfed in smoke minutes before darkness fell over the sparsely populated township. KPCL attributed the fire to a short circuit.

Three engineers ran up to the terrace to escape the smoke in the main building. They were rescued. After the fire was noticed around 5.30 pm, a fire brigade rushed to the plant and doused the fire. KPCL officials are yet to ascertain the extent of damage. It was not clear if generation was suspended following the fire.

Power Stations Take a Hit: For the past two days, the Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) has been experiencing shortage of water supply leading to a decrease in production.  Energy Department officials, however, maintain that the water supply is not a long term problem. Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Ravikumar P said the problem had been resolved and RTPS was functioning normally.  Water supply to the Bellary Thermal Power Station is also likely to be unhindered as the power station is likely to have water supply through a separate channel by the end of the month.
