BENGALURU: With the deadline for installation of rain water harvesting (RWH) facilities in residential and commercial buildings expiring on May 31, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has imposed penalties on those not complying with the regulations from June. The amount will reflect in the bills received in July.
Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage (Rain Water Harvesting) (Amendment) Regulation, 2015 has made installation of rainwater harvesting systems mandatory by May 31, 2016 for all buildings of dimensions 30x40 feet and above and constructed after December 2, 2011.
A total of 1.37 lakh buildings were identified but only 29,000 buildings have RWH. Those who have not complied will receive bills with penalty levied as 25 per cent of water and sanitary charges in the bills for three months from July. Failure to comply even after three months will result in an additional 50 per cent charges.
In case of commercial establishments, the penalty would be higher. During the first three months, 50 per cent of water and sanitary charges will be levied for three months and it will increase to 100 per cent after that.
The release has also urged the public who install RWH facilities in the meantime to provide details along with their RR Number and address to the local BWSSB Sub Divisional Office to avoid further levy.
