Davangere boy stranded in Turkey

DAVANGERE: Students of the sports hostel run by department of youth services have been anxious since Saturday morning after receiving news about a fellow student, an international wrestler from the city being stranded in Turkey amid political turmoil.

The students conducted special prayers, performed pooja and prayed at school for the safe arrival of Arjun Halkurki who went to Turkey to take part in the School World Wrestling Championship (under-19), which began on June 11 in Trabzon of Turkey, representing Karnataka state. The event was held by International School Federation.

Belagavi judo player Geeta is also stranded in Turkey along with other players who are said to be safe. The students at the sports hostel including coach Shivanand and additional coach Santosh MD were delighted when they heard Arjun had won a silver medal by beating a Georgian wrestler 8-4. However, after some time, they received information that the Indian team consisting of 55 sports persons including Arjun and  judo fighter Geeta from Belagavi were stuck there due to the attempted military coup at Istanbul and Trabzon,  the city where the championships were being held.

Arjun who received their call on Saturday morning said they were safe and were put up at a place near the Trabzon airport.
