KARWAR: The Indian Coast Guard Station (ICGS) of Karwar will get an Off Shore Patrol Vessel (OPV) to undertake search and rescue, close coast patrol and respond to emergency calls.
ICGS Shoor, the second in the series of six OPVs, is based at the New Mangalore Port.
A similar one will be stationed in Karwar. The latest entrant to join the fleet of the ICGS Karwar was the interceptor boat C-155 armed with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment.
Recently, when a merchant vessel was in distress, the ICGS Shoor, in a heroic midnight search and rescue operation, saved the lives of 14 Indian crew from merchant vessel Infinity-1 which had reported water ingress.
ICGS Shoor is 105 metres long and has been designed and built indigenously by M/s GSL and is fitted with most advanced navigation and communication equipment, sensors and machinery.
The features include 30 mm CRN 91 Naval Gun, Integrated Bridge System (IBS), Integrated Machinery Control System (IMCS), Power Management System (PMS) and High Power External Fire Fighting System. The ship is designed to carry one twin engine light helicopter.
