MANGALURU: Santosh (30) from Peruvai village in Bantwal taluk was left bedridden after a fall from a mango tree. His health, however, worsened after doctors in the district’s Wenlock Hospital refused to treat him, his family claims.

After reading about this, RTI activist Sanjeeva Kabaka wrote to the chief minister, whose special officer Sayyed Khwaja Mohidden directed the deputy commissioner to take action.

Sources told Express that the 1,000-bed hospital receives an average of 600 patients daily. A slight increase in the number of patients and the infrastructure appears inadequate.

The 170-year-old hospital has 100 wheelchairs and stretchers. Following the recent McGann Hospital incident, a staffer is now exclusively entrusted with the task of handing out wheelchairs and stretchers to patients alighting from ambulances.

Of the total 138 sanctioned posts of staff nurses, 23 are vacant. The hospital recently outsourced about 20 nurses and 15 were given by KMC.
