RAICHUR: After facing problems for two years, the first unit of  Yermaras Thermal Power Station began its commercial power generation on Wednesday.
The first unit will add 800 MW to the state grid. Karnataka Power Corporation managing director Kumar Naik announced the commencement of the commercial generation.
The second unit will also generate 800 MW and will start commercial generation within a month, Kumar said. The first unit was put for experimental basis from March 4-7 and after confirming that there are no hiccups, commercial generation was started.  Raichur Thermal Power Corporation, with the coordination of BSNL, has installed unit one.

In fact it should have commenced its commercial generation in 2015. But owing to technical problems, it could not start. Kumar complimented the station staff for the making commercial generation successful.
Later, Kumar told reporters that coal supply, railway line, fly ash units have to come up for the first unit. The complete generation will start only after six months. Within one month, the unit two will be put for examination on commercial generation.  Using super critical technology, less thermal power will be consumed for power generation.

Besides this, generation capacity will be 10 per cent more than normal process. In the normal process, each MW power generation requires 88 people. But in a super critical system, it needs only 40 people.
A proposal to own a coal mine is before the technical committee. If it is finalised there will be no problem for supply of coal for the station, he added.
