BENGALURU: A doctor removing uterus of women who approach him with stomach pain sounds like a film potboiler.
The Legislative Assembly was shocked when Leader of the Opposition Jagadish Shettar drew the Health Minister’s attention to the act of a government doctor in Ranebennur and demanded stringent action for his alleged crime.

Raising the issue during the debate on motion of thanks to the Governor’s address on Thursday, Shettar said Dr Shantha of Ranebennur hospital has removed the uterus of hundreds of girls and women who approached him with complaints of stomach pain and other gastrointestinal ailments.
“What is shocking is that though he was suspended, he got the suspension revoked by approaching the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal,” Shettar said.

Shettar also expressed his concern over Dr Shantha’s political connections and demanded filing a criminal case against the doctor. Assuring action against the doctor, Health Minister Ramesh Kumar said, “He is so influential that my own order to suspend him was not implemented. There are doctors who have abstained from duty for seven to eight years and are still drawing salaries.”
