Sharavathi waters: Protests begins in Bangalore, environmentalists join

Environmentalists, people of Sagar taluk, Hosanagar and Uttara Kannada have already started protesting against the project proposed by the coalition government.

SHIVAMOGGA: Resentment is mounting in Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada and other districts of Malnad and Coastal areas over the proposed project of taking Sharavathi waters from Linganamakki reservoir to Bengaluru.

Environmentalists, people of Sagar taluk, Hosanagar and Uttara Kannada have already started protesting against the project proposed by the coalition government. Many seers of various mutts belonging to different communities too are joining to oppose the government’s initiative.

Immediately after the coalition government was formed, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara directed authorities to come out with a detailed project report (DPR) on bringing water from Linganamakki to Bengaluru. A committee was constituted which submitted a report to the government recently. The report says, “By bringing water from Linganamakki, drinking water needs of Bengaluru can be met.”

According to sources, the report said Sharavathi water from Linganamakki is pure and if about 60 tmcft of water is brought to the state capital, the demand of Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Bengaluru rural and Kolar districts can be met easily.
