Rangayana director Cariappa resigns
MYSURU: Rangayana director Addanda C Cariappa resigned from the post on Sunday citing moral responsibility after the BJP lost the recent Assembly elections. In his resignation letter addressed to the secretary of Kannada and Culture Department dated on May 14, Cariappa said, “The government which had appointed me as the director of Rangayana has lost the election. I will respect the people’s mandate and by taking the moral responsibility, I am resigning from the director’s post.”
During his stint as the director of the repertory, Cariappa had criticised former chief minister Siddaramaiah and his welfare programmes as CM, his supporters, progressive thinkers and writers of the region on several occasions, including the national theatre festival — Bahuroopi.
Openly criticising the Tipu Jayanti started by Siddaramaiah, Cariappa had also penned a theatre play ‘Tipu Nijakanasugalu’ on the Mysuru ruler and successfully staged several plays across Karnataka. In his resignation letter, Cariappa said he was appointed as the director on December 27, 2019 and took charge on December 31, 2019. “I have honestly served Rangayana and spread its popularity throughout the world. I also improved the financial condition of the cash-strapped theatre repertory. Due to my efforts, Ranayana has Rs 2.09 crore deposit and Rs 1.57 crore in savings account in the bank,” he said.
