DHARWAD: The body of a three-year-old boy was exhumed from his grave at Yamnnur village in Navalgund taluk on Thursday, after his parents lodged a complaint that they suspect foul play in the death of their child. The child had died in their neighbour’s house, when a piece of heavy agricultural equipment fell on him, leaving him with severe head injuries and profuse bleeding.

Following a complaint filed by the deceased child’s parents Venkappa and Shanta, the Navalgund police took up the case and exhumed the body with the help of an earth mover. The tahsildar, police officers and villagers were present during the exhumation. The body has been sent for postmortem and the report is awaited.

Superintendent of Police Gopal Bykod said, “So far, it is known if the boy, Yellappa, was playing in their neighbour’s house when the agricultural equipment fell on him. The truth will come out in the postmortem report.”

A resident of Yamannur said Yellapa’s parents grew suspicious after a local resident, Nagalinga, left the village soon after the incident. While some people in the village said he left the village to attend some work, others said he is suffering from depression and went to a relative’s house.

“There were no such complications when the incident occurred, but justice cannot be denied to the parents of the boy. The parents have taken the right step. Truth will come out after the post-mortem report,” he added.

A relative of the deceased said, “It is the right of the parents to know the reason behind their child’s death. A case has been registered in this regard. We cannot comment more on this issue.”
