THRISSUR: Justice K Narayana Kurup on Saturday urged the authorities to make reading of newspapers compulsory for teachers and students. Delivering the keynote address at the award distribution function organised by Thrissur District PTA, he said that reading newspaper was essential not only for improving the communication skills of students and teachers but also for being aware of various developments taking place.

He said that the system of 'Newspapers In Education' (NIE) was in practice in the developed countries.

Reading is the greatest guru. He pointed out that lack of communication skill was one of the serious problems faced by professionally qualified youth in Kerala. He said that reading English newspapers and magazines would help them overcome the problem. The Justice pointed out that a teacher cannot remain well-informed of everything without reading newspapers. In addition to their own subjects, teachers should have sufficient knowledge in other subjects and the developments taking place around them. The 'bell and bill’ approach (attending classes on time and taking the salary at the end of the month) would not make a teacher good in imparting education, he said. Revenue Minister K P Rajendran inaugurated the function while the awards were distributed to the selected teachers, school PTAs, and students for their achievements.

PTA president V S Dattan presided over the function.
