Medical University to start functioning next year

The Medical University in Thrissur will start in 2010, with a total of sixteen post-graduate degree in its campus.

THRISSUR: The Medical University in Thrissur will start functioning in 2010, said Health Minister P K Sreemathi.

Inaugurating the site office of the medical university on the Thrissur Medical College campus at Mulumkunnathukavu, near here, on Thursday, she said that next year would be a year of development and change for the health sector in the state.

She said that during the discussions the State Planning Board had agreed to make special budgetary allocation for the health sector in the state. She said that in addition to the existing seven PG courses in Thrissur Medical College, nine more PG courses are proposed to be commenced.

Presenting the report, Medical University project officer Usha Titus said that the university would be for all systems of medicine - modern medicine, ayurveda, homeo, unani, sidha and allied subjects and the title of the institution would be Kerala University of Medical and Allied Sciences.

She said that the university will have authority in granting affiliation to all medical colleges, nursing, para-medical establishments.

All the courses conducted by medical education institutions under the Government and self-financing sectors would be under the university.

She said that a postgraduate teaching hospital with referral status would be established under the University.

Assembly Speaker K Radhakrishnan laid the foundation stone for the proposed 400 bed capacity ward of the Thrissur Medical College at the function and Public Works Minister Mons Joseph laid the foundation stone for J 1, J 2 and J 3 blocks of the hospital.

Revenue Minister K P Rajendran presided the function .

S Ajaykumar MP, C K Chandrappan MP, P R Rajan MP, Thiruvanjyur Radhakrishnan MLA, Babu M Palissery MLA, Therambil Ramakrishnan MLA, A C Moideen MLA, Thomas Unniadan MLA and others offered felicitations.

Health Secretary Viswas Metha welcomed the gathering and Thrissur Medical College Principal Dr K Praveenlal proposed a vote of thanks.
