KOCHI: The perfect look that he created for the characters in the movie Paradesi has won Pattanam Rasheed the National Award for the best make-up artist.

Adding a new golden feather to a career that has completed two decades in the art of make-up, Rasheed concealed his joy in a wholehearted smile.

“I am dedicating this award to all those artists who opened new windows of opportunity in the field of film make-up. This is for the first time that the National Award jury has decided to give awards for this category. I am lucky to be the first one to receive the award,” Rasheed said.

“Paradesi was a period drama which unfolds the story of Kunjimoosa. In other words, the movie deals with the universal theme of displacement and fight for identity in a very moving manner. So, what was in mind was to give a real life look to the characters. I wanted the characters to look natural. So I prepared graphs and sketches and showed it to the directors and the actors, including Mohanlal. Then only we finalised the ‘looks’ to be given to the characters,” he said.

Rasheed had earlier won State awards for the best make-up for the movies Adharam, Kunjikkoonan, Anandhabhadram and Paradesi.

The artiste, whose career which got a hale and hearty take-off through Navodaya films Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare, said that though that was the turning point in his life, the work that brought him a lot of compliment was T V Chandran’s Ponthenmada.

“Ponthanmada got me great recognition as a makeup artist. I am thankful to T V Chandran and cameraman Venu for my success.

Both of them encouraged me a lot while doing the work on Ponthenmada. That movie gave me the courage and determination to go for experimentation in the field of make-up,” Rasheed added.

Rasheed recently had completed the works on movies like Kutti Sranku, Yugapurushan and Sufi Paranja Kadha. These movies carry historical relevance and can be included in the list of period movies.

“These sort of movies will give one an extra level of satisfaction. Working for such movies is a great challenge.

I am happy to undertake that challenge,” he added.
