THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former Ranji Trophy captain and player Subramaniam Rajesh, 50, passed away at his Jawahar Nagar residence near Kowdiar here.

A right hand batsman and right arm medium pace bowler, he represented Kerala in 27 matches and captained the side in two. He has scored 1,103 runs in all, including seven fifties. His brothers S.Ramesh and S.Santhosh had also played for the state, including several matches alongside Rajesh. He was also captain of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for several years and was instrumental in winning many a tournament. He was an employee of the RBI.

He had also served as the Chairman of the state senior and junior selection committees and manager of the state under-19 and under- 22 teams. Former players K N Ananthapadmanabhan and P Ranganathan, who have played alongside him for the state and the RBI, recalled him as a shrewd captain and a man of crisis. ``With nil backlift and ability to play late he was always there to save the team during moments of crisis. If he was at the wicket the team never lost hope.’’ recall Ananthan and Rangan. Rajesh is survived by mother Lalitha Subramaniam, brothers Ramesh and Santhosh, sister Bharathi and son Rahul Rajesh.

Rajesh’s body will be kept at the Kerala Cricket Association office here from 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.

for the public to pay respects. Later, the body will be brought to his residence (H - 8, Jawahar Nagar). The cremation will take place at 3.30 pm on Friday.
