Four to get St Athanasius Paulose centenary awar

ALUVA: The 'Centenary Award' instituted by the Jacobite Church in memory of St Athanasius Paulose (Valiya Thirumeni of Malankara), will be presented to four eminent personalities every year.

Padma Bhushan Dr P K Warrier, Padma Shri Chevalier Dr Tony Fernandez, Padma Shri Pucadiyil Ittoop John and football coach M M Jacob will receive the St Athanasius Award at the valedictory meeting of the centenary of the episcopal ordination at Aluva Town Hall here on Sunday afternoon.

Dr P K Warrier is the chief physician and managing trustee of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala.

A Fellow of Indian Academy of Medicine, Dr P K Warrier is the recipient of many prestigious awards and honours.

Dr Tony Fernandez a renowned ophthalmologist is the recipient of the Padma Shri and the Dr B C Roy Award in 1979.

He holds the record of doing the highest number of corneal transplantation and eye surgeries in India. Dr. Tony Fernandez had been decorated with the Chevalier title by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

Pucadiyil Ittoop John, recipient of Padma Shri is a prominent Indian plasma physicist. He occupies the Meghnad Saha Chair in plasma science and technology at the Institute for Plasma Research, Gujarat. John is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Gujarat Academy of Science.

M M Jacob, the chief coach of the Kerala Football Team, had represented the country in many tournaments such as Asian Games. He was the captain in the state football team, which had played Santhosh Trophy for 8 years.

He is the chief coordinator of the prestigious Mor Athanasius Trophy, All India Inter School Football Tournament.

M M Jacob serves in the Central Excise and Customs Department, Kochi as its superintendent. Union Minister for Law Veerappa Moily will inaugurate the function and Catholicos Mar Thomas I will preside over the meeting on Sunday.
