KOTTAYAM: Mammen Mathew will assume charge as chief editor and managing director of the Malayala Manorama on Wednesday. Mammen Mathew, 65, who has 44 years of publication experience, is the eldest son of the late K M Mathew, who was the chief editor of Malayala Manorama till his death recently.
After completing his post graduation from St Stephen’s College, Delhi, Mammen underwent editorial training in The Times of India. He then joined the Malayala Manorama as its Delhi correspondent. In 1968, he became a reporter for the Western Mail in Cardiff in the United Kingdom. He also worked in London’s The Sunday Times under Sir Harold Evans, who was its editor.
Later, he worked as a reporter for the Oklahoma City Times and The Daily Oklahoma. In 1970, he became the resident editor of the Kozhikode unit of Malayala Manorama. Ten years later, he assumed charge as general manager and managing editor of Malayala Manorama in Kottayam. In 1988, he became the editor and managing director.
Mammen Mathew was the president of the Editors Guild of India and The Indian Newspaper Society.
He also served as chairman of the Indian Chapter of the Commonwealth Press Union. He held office twice as a member of the Press Council of India.
