KOLLAM: Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), under the Government of India, will set up a chapter at Pallimon village in the Nedumpana Panchayat in the district, outgoing District Collector A Shajahan told a ‘meet-the-press’ programme held at the Press Club here on Monday.
IIMC is India’s premier media school funded and promoted by the Government of India and an autonomous body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Meanwhile, Shajahan said that the file recommending the handing over of five acres of land which is 20-km from city for this project was the last of the files he signed as District Collector.
Opening of an IIMC had been announced by Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni earlier. As of now, IIMC will start functioning in Thiruvananthapuram and will be shifted to the Kollam campus as and when the premise is ready for occupation.
IIMC, when completed, will be one of the premier institutes in Mass Communication and Journalism in the country, according to the project envisaged by the Ministry.
There will be graduate and post-graduate courses.
The intake of students, modus operandi regarding the admission process and such other details are yet to be officially announced.
The functioning of the IIMC is expected to commence during 2010-2011 academic year.
EFLU campus in Kulathupuzha
Shajahan said that steps had been taken to handover 50 acres of land at Thinkal Karikkakam near Kulathupuzha to set up the off campus of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad.
The courses are expected to commence this year itself. Press Club president A Vijayan presided.
