KANNUR: Marking turning point in the continuing literacy movement in Kerala, Kannur was declared the first district which achieved the total primary education on Thursday.
The formal declaration of the district having made this unique achievement was made by Education Minister M A Baby.
Addressing the function at the Towns Square here, Baby said that this was a commendable achievement made by the state since its historic attainment of total literacy more than a decade ago. He said that the Literacy Mission would take the initiative in making Kerala the first state in the country with total primary education. The credit for being the first grama panchayat to achieve total primary education went to Nilambur and it was Nilambur which remained the guiding star in this regard, he said.
As many as 25,540 learners passed the Standard IV equivalency examination following the primary education programme organised by the Literacy Mission with the support of the district panchayat, municipalities and grama panchayats in the district.
Devaswom Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran presided over the function. Dr Prabhakaran Pazhassi, director of the State Literacy Mission, delivered the keynote
address.
M Prakasan MLA, Payyanur Kunhiraman and K P Mohanan MLA were among those who spoke. M Sampathkumar, Education and Health Standing Committee Chairman of Kannur district panchayat, welcomed the gathering. A cultural procession by students, teachers and learners also was held as part of the programmes.
