NILAMBUR: Mujeeb Rahman, who shot dead SI Vijayakrishnan of Kalikavu police station on Sunday, and his wife Khayarunneesa were found dead inside the forest at Thampuran Estate, near here, on Monday.

The workers of the estate found the bodies of Mujeeb and his third wife inside the forest early on Monday morning. The police had been searching for Mujeeb since he escaped with his wife and two children, Dilshad, 10, and Muhsina, 4, to the forest near his house on Sunday night.

ADGP (northern region) Mahesh Kumar Singla told reporters that Mujeeb committed suicide after shooting his wife. His two children are safe. People residing near the Thampuram Estate said they had heard gunshots between 4 am and 5 am. Vijayakrishnan, Grade SI of Kalikavu police station, was shot dead by Mujeeb when a police team arrived at his house at Chokkadu, near Kalikavu, to execute the warrant issued by a family court on the basis of a complaint filed by his fourth wife Umaimath.

Vijayakrishnan, who was shot in the chest, died while being taken to the Nilambur Taluk Hospital. Vijayakrishnan was cremated with state honours on the premises of his house. Earlier, the body was kept at the Kozhikode Police Club and the Vandur police station for the people to pay homage. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who visited the house of Vijayakrishnan at Ambalappadi, near Vandur, on Monday said a special police squad would be formed to prevent the use of unlicensed guns in Malappuram and Wayanad districts.

DGP Jacob Punnoose said those who pass on information to the police on illegal production and use of guns would be rewarded.
