THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ramesh Chennithala is all set to enter the record books. He is going to be the first Congress leader to become the KPCC president consecutively for the second term. Now it’s only a formality for AICC president Sonia Gandhi to announce his name as the next PCC president.
The newly-elected (nominated) KPCC members, who met here on Friday, passed a unanimous resolution urging the AICC president to nominate the new president of the Pradesh Congress Committee. A consensus has already been reached in the party on anointing Ramesh Chennithala as the next president.
Hence, no surprise is expected from New Delhi.
After his successful stint as president which saw the party registering an impressive performance in the last Lok Sabha elections, Chennithala’s task now will be to repeat the performance in the Assembly elections due in April next year. Perhaps, he will create a history of sorts again if the Congress-led UDF comes to power in the State in 2011 as he would have the enviable record of sweeping double.
The KPCC general body meeting which passed the resolution also entrusted the AICC president to nominate the KPCC office- bearers and also the presidents and office-bearers of the District Congress Committees .
“This marks the end of the elections to the Pradesh Congress Committee here,’’ a visibly relieved M Krishnaswamy, who was in charge of the KPCC elections, told reporters after the meeting. Asked where the elections were held, Krishnaswamy said: “Elections were held at the block and mandalam levels.’’ He said that there was not even a single voice of dissent in passing the resolution urging the AICC president to nominate the KPCC and DCC teams. “All are happy with the decision and everyone supported it,’’ Krishnaswamy said. However, he claimed that no names have been recommended to the party high command to be named as the new KPCC president.
“It will be decided by the party high command. The name will be announced soon,’’ he said.
