PATHANAMTHITTA: Historian K N Panicker has said that the downtrodden and people belonging to backward communities are yet to be uplifted even decades after independence.

Presenting a paper at a seminar on C Kesavan, held as part of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Kozhencherry Speech, at the St Thomas Higher Secondary School at Kozhenchery on Wednesday, Panicker said that the speech made by C Kesavan was with the objective of drawing the attention to the sufferings of the marginalised sections of society. Even after the rule by the democratically-elected governments, hardly any considerable change had taken place in the living conditions of the backward class and poor people, Panicker said.

Senior Metropolitan of the Niranom diocese Geevarghese Mar Osthathios inaugurated the seminar.  Kozhencherry St Thomas College principal Alexander K Samuel presided over the function.

M M Basheer, T K G Nair and P Prasad also spoke on the occasion.
