ALAPPUZHA: Director-General of Police (DGP) Jacob Punnoose said that Punnapra sub- inspector M K Rajesh had been suspended from service in connection with the death of a youth, who allegedly committed suicide owing to the alleged police atrocities at Punnapra police station.

Jacob Punnoose told ‘Express’ that the inquiry was handed over to the Crime Branch.

Suneesh, 24, who was released by the court on bail in a criminal case, committed suicide by consuming poison.

The kin of the deceased lodged complaint with the DGP alleging that Suneesh committed suicide owing to the police atrocities at Punnapra police station. Following this, a DySP from Police Headquarters held an inquiry into the incident. DGP suspended Rajesh according to the inquiry report of the DySP.

Suneesh was arrested on March 20 by the Punnapra police in connection with a case registered in 2009. Ambalappuzha Judicial First Class Magistrate Court released him on bail on March 21. On March 22, he was admitted to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital after he allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming poison.

He died at the hospital on Monday.

Rajesh reportedly told his senior police officials that he did not even see Suneesh and it was his colleagues who dealt the case.

It is said that the police had not conduct a medical check up after arresting Suneesh.
